NYT: Climate Change Cracking Foundations?
If you haven’t seen it already, this article in the New York Times may strike a little fear in the heart of homeowners in the Ohio River Valley, which has seen its fair share of “severe weather events” over the past year and a half.
Reporter Kate Murphy finds a huge increase in the number of homeowners facing cracks in their homes’ foundations, a trend, she says, that could be attributed to climate change and the strange and severe weather it often brings. Increased rain, more frequent and prolonged droughts, and more are affecting soils throughout the nation, destabilizing some houses. Add to that, she reports, the legacy of the housing boom, when there was a rush to build homes on perhaps less stable soils, and you have a minor crisis brewing.
Yet another of the myriad, unexpected consequences of climate change that may be in store for us…but one that can be mitigated.
